How can building automation help the environment?

Smart building
At a time when climate change and environmental depletion are undoubtedly real issues, building automation has become an essential tool to help reduce human impact on the environment and promote sustainable development. This type of technology ensures efficient use of energy, resource saving and environmental protection, creating favorable conditions for both people and nature. One of the main benefits of building automation is its potential to reduce energy consumption and costs, making it an important tool for promoting sustainability and combating climate change.

Do buildings affect environmental pollution?

A recent study conducted in the US found that the built environment accounts for approximately 42% of annual global CO2 emissions. Of these total emissions, construction works account for approximately 27% per year, while the carbon contained in just four construction and infrastructure materials – cement, iron, steel and aluminum – accounts for an additional 15% per year.

On the other hand, in the studies and observations carried out in Latvia, which were carried out by the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology (LVĜMC) with the help of an air quality observation station located in a place of intense traffic in the center of Riga, it was found that one part of the pollution is made up of pollution coming to Latvia from outside, i.e. , pollution brought by the weather from other parts of the world, for example, dust from the Sahara was brought through the stratosphere all the way to the airspace of Latvia.

However, the rest comes from air pollution in Latvia. Observations revealed that solid particles are one of the main problems in Riga, as the next problem is nitrogen dioxide, which comes from road transport. The worst situation usually occurs in winter and spring, when it is cold, heating equipment is working intensively, and pollution caused by transport is present.

What are the environmental benefits of a building automation system?

One of the main benefits that building automation offers is efficient energy management. Automated systems, such as smart thermostats, light sensors and automated blinds, allow you to optimize energy efficiency by adjusting lighting and heating according to building usage habits and external conditions. This reduces energy consumption and costs and helps reduce carbon emissions and environmental pollution.

In addition to energy efficiency, building automation also contributes to saving water and other resources. For example, automated water treatment systems can control water flow, minimizing excess water use and preventing excessive waste of resources.

It is also important to note that building automation not only provides specific environmental benefits, but also contributes to sustainable development and public education on the importance of environmental protection. By choosing to incorporate automated systems into their buildings and businesses, people and businesses actively contribute to the sustainable development of the environment and set an inspiring example for others.

Considering the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development, building automation is a significant step forward. It reduces the environmental impact of buildings and companies and promotes awareness of saving resources and efficient energy use. Building automation systems not only solve technical problems, but also promote a lifestyle focused on environmental sustainability and the well-being of our planet.
